NRI Money Clinic — USA

The NRI Money Clinic, built for NRIs in the USA

US tax law treats Indian mutual funds, NRE deposits and PPF very differently from how India does. We diagnose the gap before it becomes a filing problem.

What's different for NRIs in the USA

  • FATCA & FBAR reporting — Indian NRE/NRO accounts and mutual funds often need to be disclosed to the IRS every year — missing this carries real penalties.
  • PFIC treatment of Indian mutual funds — most Indian equity and debt mutual funds are classified as PFICs under US tax law, which can mean punitive taxation without proper planning.
  • India-US DTAA — knowing which country taxes what first, and how to claim relief, so the same income isn't effectively taxed twice.
  • Estate exposure — US persons face different estate-tax thresholds on worldwide assets, which changes how Indian property and investments should be structured.

Every NRI Money Clinic session still runs through the same three stages — financial diagnosis, prescriptive solutions and, where needed, remedial care — applied specifically to the rules that govern NRIs in the USA.

Common Questions

NRI Money Clinic FAQs — USA

I'm a US citizen or green card holder with an NRE account — do I need to report it to the IRS?

In most cases yes — foreign accounts above certain thresholds typically need to be reported under FBAR and FATCA rules. We review your specific accounts and confirm what applies to you.

Are Indian mutual funds a bad idea for US-based NRIs?

Not necessarily, but most are taxed as PFICs in the US, which can be punitive without proper planning. We look at whether your existing funds still make sense or whether alternatives fit better.

I'm planning to move back to India — does my US tax status affect that?

Yes — your exit from US tax residency and entry into Indian residency, including any RNOR window, both need to be sequenced carefully.

Can you file my US taxes?

We focus on the Indian side of your finances and coordinate with your US CPA where the two intersect — we're not a US tax filing service.
